Personal Statement…

“Be Creative, It Feels Good!”, “Add some colour into your life, I do!”

Textiles. I love the subject, always have done, and always will. Art is my pride and joy. I have loved and enjoyed Art right from an early age. My passion for it has progressed over the years, especially during the last four years of GCSE and A-Level, during this time I have gained an Art Studio just for me at home in the conservatory.

My earliest memory of being interested in Art was collecting Christmas and birthday cards and any other images that I liked and cutting and sticking them in a source book that my Auntie had made for me when I was about 7. This love of Art has stayed with me passionately and will continue to do so throughout my life.

My creative interests have directed me towards the discipline of Textiles. The reasons behind this choice are mostly down to my Auntie, she has been the one person who has influenced me most during my Art career. This is because she is a Textile Artist herself and has given me lots of inspiration.

Textiles I think is a powerful subject matter which has always amazed me. I’ve always felt that Nature and the Environment have been a strong influence and theme throughout my works. I prefer to be using different materials and resources such as fabric, threads and beads. As a result of this, some of the techniques that I have learned are Screen Printing, Mono Printing, Lino Printing, Paper-Making, Silk Paper Making, Felting, Tie Dying and Weaving.

As this interest grew, I have taken part in many workshops, such as screen printing on t-shirts, felt-making and silk paper workshops. I have also visited many Exhibitions, Galleries and Museums such as the Cambridge Museums, for example the Zoology Museum, the Eastern Region Textile Gallery and many of the Cambridge Open Studios such as Rhiannon Thomas, Gina Ferrari who I actually studied in my A-Level. Previously I have enjoyed visiting the

Cambridge Open Studios where I was able to talk to the artists and see their work. I think that’s always the best way to get inspired. I also like to visit Galleries such as the Tate in London.

I have my own website which runs on a popular blogging platform that my brother hosts. I use it to record all my Art projects that I have produced over the last few years, such as redecorating my room; I painted a Georgia O’Keeffe styled work on my bedroom wall. My website also includes blogs that I have written about my Art. Sometimes, I upload images I like on it as part of a recording medium.

Some of my other interests include swimming, badminton and the theatre. I also like to visit places with my family such as the Lake District, York where my brother, Nick lives and the RSPB Nature reserve where we go on long walks. Being in a natural environment has always inspired me. Another place that always inspires me is my Aunt’s; she lives in the Fens in Ely.

I know a Textiles BA (Hons) or a Surface Design Degree course is the direction I want to take my Art in. I think I will be an ideal student because I am reliable, enthusiastic and generally excited about anything I create.
